I just want to reiterate something on these datafeed sites. I don’t get rich off them. I make maybe a sale a month per site. It’s still very much the more the merrier. The more sites you have, the better chance you’ll score a sale. Like everything else on the Web, unless you create a MySpace or YouTube, or know something about something someone else cares about, you just have to spam your way to making money.
I half-ass the whole process. I use subdomains. I don’t trade links. I don’t submit press releases. I don’t distribute articles for them. If I did these things I would imagine my chance of making a few extra bucks would improve. But I seriously doubt anyone will be retiring off building a few of these sites.
And frankly, the sites that I build today, I hope to reap the reward 6 months from now. Maybe even next Christmas. I certainly don’t expect to build a datafeed site today and expect to make money in two weeks. None of my sites have worked that way. 3 months is about the best so far, from the time I built the thing to the time I recorded a sale. And I have a couple of sites that have been up for three months, maybe longer and haven’t made a dime.
It’s just a litle extra cash. Like bum marketing. Article/Adsense sites. Individually they don’t make much, but all together it’s enough to pay for a snowboarding trip in January.
