Gurus Run Amuck

May 8th, 2006 · 5 Comments

There appears to be a series of Adsense videos that are being pimped to death by the guberus. On the surface they look pretty good actually and I may in fact get sucked into buying them. Most of my sites have Adsense on them and if there is someone that has a way of displaying them in a smarter way than me then I’d be crazy not to listen.

But here is the thing. These guberus are all in competition with each other to see who can sell the most of this product. The problem is do these guys actually use and believe in the product they are pimping or are they just trying to make a buck? So far I have seen very little evidence to suggest that they actually believe in what they are selling.

It bothers me to think that I am just another notch on their white board rankings when I spend my hard earned money on some product they are marketing. It’s so important that they be number one that most of the top 5 in the rankings are giving away some other swag to encourage you to buy.

It may be that this is a good thing and you will be getting alot of value for your money. The pessimist in me says they will do anything to bring in the sale and I wonder why. I have to give props to Allen Gardyne in that he actually appeared to have one of his assistants try out the techniques to see if they made a difference. They did, and that is the only reason I am actually thinking of purchasing.

So here is my guarantee of sorts to you. I will not pimp something to you unless I am damn well using it myself. Which in and of itself is interesting as I do not have the success as the guberus have and for me to suggest you follow me down my rabbit hole is actually quite funny.

Be careful out there. The guberus are working hard for your money.

You’ve got it right, except that it’s not just the gurus…the wannabe gurus are after your money too :)

Uh huh. They all do an effective job at pulling my purse strings. I am amazed at all the different tools and ebooks that people are selling these days. I wonder if there is an industry like internet marketing where so many people are building so many different mouse traps.

I mean, all we are doing is building a web page.

I really like the way you write here. I’m also in the same boat, spending money and getting not too much on return…actually a funny thing happened to me, I was paying so many memberships (you know four or five 47 USD monthly payments) that my bank thought my credit card had been cloned so they stopped paying…great thing…since then I have a new credit card and I’m thinking very well before creating a new subscription…

Now I’ve decided how much I can afford to spend but I’m going to spend it in things I need (unique content, links…) and no more software or memberships…I think that’s a better way to spend your money…

Anyway keep posting and sharing your “success”…

Thanks for reading Dan. These memberships are crazy aren’t they? I’ve done the same thing. The next one always seem better than the one you are already in.

The thing is, let’s say you buy a $47 membership. You pretty much have to get on it and get the material modified and up on the web as soon as you can. Why? The next month is just around the corner. At what point are you going to start turning a profit?

In two months you’ve blown through $94 and most likely the search engines have not yet indexed you, much less having a decent ranking to get found on the sites you’ve built.

It’s a slippery and expensive slope these memberships. That’s the reason I stick with one now. Well, two, but with one of them I can get free monthly membership by writing an article.

I’m slowly coming to the conclusion - well actually it keeps biting me in the butt, that the only way to make real money is to think for yourself and strike out on your own path.

Lets say out of every 3 people that do this - 1 succeeds. It’s still better odds than 100 people join a membership site and only 10 succeed.

At the time of writing I my own affiliate income is down after my best program shut down. So I’m not claiming guru status at all. It’s strictly sling mud at the wall and hope some sticks. But pay attention to what is working and do more of it.

I like you blog by the way - it’s refreshing.
