A Ramble | A Bit on Utility Poster | Some Thoughts on Wordpress

May 10th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I don’t have much to say today. I thought I’d start typing and see where it takes me. As you know I’ve been using Utility Poster over the last few days and I must say I am a fan. If you have blogs and need to be able to add content quickly and get ideas for writing content then this tool will help. I am one of the 31 million webmasters with a golf blog. I care nothing about golf (sorry Griz) and know even less about it. But my blog makes money in the niche. I have a rough time coming up with content for it (Though I do have some PLR) and have an even less interest to do so. What to do? Open up Utility Poster and search with the keyword I’m targeting. I do a search at nichebot for a long tail, search UP with a short to medium tail keyword, write my title with the long tail and use the long tail keyword in my opening intro paragraph and drag in a couple blog posts from the blogosphere. Time spent: About 5-8 minutes, depending on how long it takes me to get a decent keyword phrase. But here is where it gets even better: If I post from Wordpress blog I get a trackback. A nice little backlink to my site which the owner is happy to have because I have linked to his blog as well. And the topic is relevant. Everybody is happy. Blogging the way it’s meant to be.

And speaking of blogging. Wordpress.com is on fire in Google. I have built a nice little stable of Wordpress hosted blogs and they are fully indexed in Google. Every. single. post. No they aren’t spam. No they aren’t affiliate blogs. No they have nothing to buy on them. They are simply random blogs that I write on topics from cycling, celebs, movies, politics or anything else on my mind that I want to start a blog about. I ramble a post and every few posts I will work in a keyword anchor text link to a BANS site, or WPDFI script site or a lens, or XSP site. I dunno WTF is up with Google but I do know it is licking up my WP hosted sites like a drunk coed who spilled her booze on the dorm floor.

Speaking of Google. I am now the proud owner of PR 4 websites. I have no idea why. It’s not like I do a ton of link exchanges. It seems the ones that I did do link exchanges for are still sitting at PR1-2. If you do a backlink check from the Google toolbar on this one site of mine that is a PR4, there is virtually no backlinks. I think it has to do with the Blog directories I submitted to. I do all the social voting and shit for it so it stays in the top 50-100 for top blogs.

That’s all I got. Probably wasn’t worth your time but I thought I’d document the efforts.

I’ve noticed that WordPress.com blogs get a lot of Google luv too. I’ve got a few of them and all of them get indexed quickly and show up well in search. They drop back after a few days but they seem to still carry a lot of authority.

Yes, those PR 4 rankings are a bit mysterious. I launched a hybrid site (straight html for the main site with a WP blog hosted on an inner directory) in late November and have updated it, oh, once in a dog’s age, have very few backlinks to it, and just generally neglect the heck out of the thing. And in the latest update it’s now a PR 4 site.

    Doesn’t seem possible, but, hey - I ain’t complaining.

And the sites I build that are just WP blogs are insane - like you said every page is loved by Google and it’s weirdly easy to get in the front page of Google for competitive keywords. Whatever is going on, I hope it continues! Maybe there’s something weird in the water over at Google?
