MySpace sucks. But then again I’m not 20 years old either. Nor am I spamming the crap out of all my bot generated friends and making $500 a day with paid surveys. Just from a user standpoint I don’t get what people see in this thing. It’s messy. Most profiles are created by people with some kind of mental deficit. I’m surprised no one has been sued for causing seizures in visitors from the awful blinking lights and graphics on their Space. And when did side scrolling web sites come back in style?
The last census had something like 140 million profiles created. Internet marketers eyes light up like moonbeams just thinking about it. Just like back in the day when creating portal sites, the idea for the enterprising spammer is to create as many profiles as possible and add as many friends as you can to those profiles. Thankfully the internet market has come to the aid of these folks in the form of profile generators and friend adders. With the push of a button you can build 100’s of profiles in a single day. With a push of another button all these profiles can have 100’s of friends in a matter of days as well.
But don’t push too hard, mind you. MySpace doesn’t like it’s network to be used for making money, unless of course they are the one making money. So they are actively hunting down these SpamSpaces. They are hiring real people to surf around the Spaces and kill these profiles. The profile builders try to get smart and MySpace tries to get smarter. The never ending battle. I got caught up in it during the Google wars. Building crap portal sites, creating splogs, building links, social networking, etc. And I almost found myself caught up in the middle of this battle as well.
I tried the latest tools to sling hundreds of profiles to MySpace. I watched as MySpace adjusted. I downloaded the latest patch to thwart MySpace. I kept building. I watched as they deleted my profiles. More patches. The game will have to continue without my participation. Save the winners never quit speech.
Yes, you can make a ton of money, I guess, marketing on MySpace. I haven’t. I gave up the profile builder. I think it’s like what we discovered after the portal building fiasco. Real sites are what will ultimately make you successful. There is no way to fake this stuff and win. Yea you might be able to ride this little blip and make some money RIGHT NOW, but it won’t last. The quick and easy money is fast leaving the Spaces.
I think that there is something to MySpace. I think if you are clever you can make some cash, maybe not on MySpace, but because of what you do on MySpace. Build profiles to support your niche, make a few thousand friends, comment on their spaces, leave your website URL, hope they visit and pray they click on your Adsense or buy one of your CrapBank products. I think that kind of traffic can rival Google’s if you do it right.
I do see the value of getting a bot to add friends and send out comment spam. Some things make your life so much easier. SpaceStation gets my vote. I haven’t heard too many good things about all the others. Support issues not getting answered seems to be the biggest problem.
I joined SpaceHogs a couple of weeks ago. I was tempted to buy Warrior Forum Special Offers when I was looking at marketing MySpace. There are tons. Each $17, or $37, $47, which started to add up. For $127 I figured I could join a forum and get good info from people doing a MySpace thing right now. I was actually prepared to recommend it to those people with an interest in MySpace marketing. It’s a good one stop shop.
Well now the owners have decided to try to sell the thing. Don’t you think that says a lot? People don’t sell things if there is potential. They gave a fairly lengthy explanation about needing to sell which is all well and good. But the timing makes it seem that the maximum value is in the site right now. Maybe the sale will be a good thing, but I wouldn’t waste my money finding out. Consider this one taken for the team.
I don’t doubt for a second that some very bright people are making some good money doing their thing on MySpace. I’m just not one of them. I also don’t doubt that they are working awfully hard to continue the fight against an entity that will ultimately win, just like during the Google wars. But I will use MySpace (Squidoo too!) to drag traffic to my blogs and websites. That I do see value in.
