Thought I would try my hand at the ProBlogger Group Writing Project. It would be kind of cool if this article was accepted.
How to really become successful being a webmaster? I’ve been trying to understand that statement for the last few months in earnest. Making money online is both easy and incredibly difficult.
As a webmaster all you really need to know about being in business on the Internet is this: build a site that people want to visit. It could not be any easier. People will ask to link to you. They will write about you on their website. They will tell their friends to go visit your site.
And all you have to do is plant a single tiny seed. Go to a forum and make a post. Go to another forum and make another post. And another. And so on. Watch the seed grow.
Want it to be difficult? I can tell you all about that method as well. Subscribe to countless newsletters and believe everything the marketer says is true about membership sites, products and services. Buy yourself site builders, RSS submitters, weblog posters, article re-writers, link swappers, keyword scrapers, directory submitters, social bookmarking tools, landing page generators, sales page writers and niche creators.
Buy yourself a stack of ebooks and find time to read each and every one of them. Implement every tactic provided.
Join membership sites to talk tactics that teach you how to build article sites, affiliate sites, eBay stores, or market to social networking sites.
Purchase products and services that promise to save you time and effort.
Jump on the latest buzz words and buy products, memberships and services related to them. Keep up with all the latest tools and make sure not to miss a single issue of your favorite marketer’s newsletter. And around and around we go.
I am exhausted just writing it. When I think about where I have come from I find it pathetic and a little sad.
All I had to do is just build a simple site that was entertaining or informative. Simply sit down and research and write about what interested me and talk about it. But I wanted it quick and easy. I wanted to believe the hype and the promises. I was hypnotized by the long slick sales letters. I made others rich while I still struggle.
Funny thing happened on the way to making a buck, quick and easy. It got expensive, time consuming and hard.
How to become a successful webmaster? Keep it real and simple.

Hi
I just came across your site, via a blog from Mark Ling. It’s reassuring to hear that so much of what looks and smells like ordure actually is ordure! I’ve been floating around without a rudder for months (or is it years?) looking for someone who is genuinely going to show me the way ahead. I’m kind of gravitating towards guys who can string a few sentences together without promising to make me rich within the hour.
People like Alan Gardene, Mark Ling and Mark Perry come to mind. On the other hand the ‘rich jerks’ of this world might just be doing something right. Ho hum!
Keep up the good work!
Looks like my entry made it into the contest. I have no illusions about winning the thing but having my article and link posted on ProBlogger can’t hurt the exposure. Every little bit helps.
Planting seeds is a simple and effective method…i agree. Easier then some of the other things out there.
Good read! I am sure your are getting good exposure! Nice contribution to the Writing Project at ProBlogger. My How to is also up if you want to check it out.
Dave, that’s what bugs me and exactly what I have been chasing over the last year and a half or so. All these rich guys seem to know what they are doing and stacking benjamins in the process, but it never worked for me. I keep finding that the simple ways of building sites that I was using 3-4 years ago does just fine today with a heck of a lot less pain. It’s not quick and easy but it keeps me from stressing out over the process.
Thanks for reading
Hi Jersey Girl. Thanks for dropping by. It takes things a while to grow but it is easier in the long run.
Like I tell my daughter when we planted the tomatoes seeds a few months ago, “just wait, they’ll grow and soon you’ll be picking some every day.” And sure enough we just finished with our last batch and she was thrilled in the process. IM=same thing.
Hey Matt. Yea that project at ProBlogger is kinda neat. I think everyone involved will welcome the different visitors that may come their way.
I read your entry and thought it was very good. I can relate, as well as my wife
to your article. Lots of good things to think about and act upon.
Well said!
Well, it’s definitely not as easy as it may appear on the surface! Our how-to is up as well if you’d like to check it out!!
This is really good advice. Too many people get caught up in the complications instead of just enjoying the ride.
I was going to subscribe to your feed but you don’t seem to have one…
Hey Kate. Thanks for dropping by. Sorry about the feed, or lack thereof. Seems that I let the simple get lost in the confusing. With all the social bokmarkin links I didn’t think to make sure my RSS fed was available as normal. Thanks for letting me know. I should get a link up for that a well.
Here it is:
