Alright, I called my phone provider and they said that Internet access on a phone will cost me $30 a month. Apparently the figures above are if you buy all the texting and phone usage for local and long distance calls. I could go buy an iPhone and simply add $30 to my bill and stare at a tiny screen all day. There were a couple of apps that I was interested in. One uses the GPS for cycling. Looks cool. Is cool. Gives great data. For about an hour. Apparently it runs through the battery. Not very useful. I've looked at different websites to see what the best apps are. Not interested.

Stephen King writes a column for EW. This week he talked about a study that suggests the average person stares at a screen, any screen, for at least 8 hours a day. Seems excessive. I too doubt I will get to the end days wishing I had spent more time looking at shit on all these screens. I spend enough time doing mandatory screen time at work. Can't do much about that unless I get a job counting trees. But I can manage the amount otherwise and spend time dong REAL things.

Still no for the gizmo.

We took our daughters phone away from her. Typical teenage bullshit. Anyway, she lives for texting. It was more than amusing watching her life suffer without it. Last night she actually got on the landline and made a phone call and talked to her girlfriend "old school". I wasn't sure she knew how to do that.

LMAO I thought I was the only person on the planet who was quite happy with a $40 mobile (total not monthly) and topping up the prepay with $20 every month or 2! Get a netbook if you want to surf - at least the keyboard is almost usable!

I just have a old Nokia model cell phone from Tracfone. I pay about 20 bucks about every four months - no contract.

I use it only for emergencies, or the occasional call. Works fine, even here in some of the more difficult mountain terrain here in Western North Carolina.

There is no one I need to communicate with that much that they can't send me an IM, e-mail, or call me on the land line.

I don't want to be chained or harassed by technology. I am busy enough from just the normal modes of communication thank you very much..

Unless you have a really good reason to have any of the features of the IPhone or "Crackberry" the cost to operate - is just too prohibitive.

One positive note about the IPhone. Create an application that you can sell in their store, or use that "app" it to get some back links..

I just sayin..

Dan, $60 sounds a heck of a lot better than what that chart indicates the price is. I checked into the broadband card and like you said it was $60. My work gets a business discount of $13. But it comes down to how much access do I want or need. And the answer I keep coming back to is, not much.

Brawnydt, yea if I was stuck on a train for an hour or more or was slogging through airports, then I'd probably get one, or a Kindle, just to keep from going out of my mind with boredom.
