This is why you don’t build blogs on free sites and expect to keep them around. From Wired:

Blogging platform Blogetery.com was cut off by its hosting company last week after the authorities said al-Qaida “terrorist material” was found on one of its servers, said a statement from web host BurstNET Technologies Monday.

Blogetery, a platform for some 70,000 blogs, was taken down by BurstNET after the Federal Bureau of Investigation asked BurstNET “to provide information regarding ownership” of the server hosting Blogetery.com,” BurstNET said.

I used them before for backlinks to other websites. 70,000 bullshit blogs no doubt. 69,995 were probably spammy delight. But if the fed fuckers and chickenshit owners can take down all blogs after one or two blogs were probably the culprit then any free blog platform can be yanked I would guess.

Think about the shared hosting you (and I) participate in. One blog or site has terrorist material, perhaps the imperial federal government would shut the whole server down. Not a pleasant thought. Would it happen? I dunno? Could it happen? I dunno. But the feds are not really looking after your interests at all. They have no problem shitting on our privacy via The Patriot Act so I guess anything is possible.

Again I don’t know what this shit is about but I don’t like how it feels being an owner of websites and using servers and services I do not control, given Big Brother’s over-reach and over-reactions.

Did you really have nothing better to do than sit in a line to obtain a smartphone? Will they not sell an iPhone next week? Next month? How about in 6 weeks or during Christmas? Why does your existence revolve around obtaining an iPhone? RIGHT NOW! Get a grip dude. There is more to life than sitting around tapping a stupid screen staring at your porn or finding out what your bud ate for dinner.

Take a look at some of our nation’s finest supposedly waiting in line a week…for a damn phone.

People in Japan have nothing better to do either apparently. Why, one asshat even made a costume for the occasion.

Apple zombies indeed. I should create an app that simulates standing in line. Apparently it would sell very well.

What I say I make is irrelevant. Nobody can prove I do or don’t make $23 a month or $5K a month. With the exception of the imperial federal government of the United Socialist States.

If someone performs keyword research, posts content to websites based on those keywords, find places to backlink to those websites, monetize it with affiliate programs or CPC programs they will make between $0-$15K +/month. Folks can make money, or not. They can do the exact same thing as their favorite guru and he might say he makes $500/day and they might only make $2/day.

Nothing I say I do is anything different than any other niche slinger. What I do is time tested and proven. I’ve said a thousands times: keyword research, content creation and distribution and backlinks is my game. I make some money doing it. How much people make or don’t make is not up to what I personally make. Folks are using the same techniques and making $15K a month apparently. I am not. Others aren’t making shit and wondering why they aren’t getting a slice of the pie. Perhaps niche slinging is not for them. Perhaps they don’t work hard. Perhaps their luck sucks. Perhaps their niches are crap. I dunno.

If I tell folks I make $2K a month what does that mean? That if they don’t make $2K that they are a failure? That if they make $4K that I am? Neither is the correct answer. Some of the top niche slingers make 5 figures monthly apparently. They work their asses off. I do not. Goals are different for different people. I don’t feel slighted one bit if all 8 readers of this blog make five figures and I don’t. I know why I don’t. If you aren’t and want to, do you know why?

I’ve never cared how much people make. It’s impressive that some people make 5 figures a month but it’s never meant a thing to me. I understand the curiosity factor. You read some asshat’s blog and wonder if they are making money like if they weren’t then everything they had written is them talking out the side of their neck. I get it. But it’s not about them. It’s about you. This is the wrong asshat blog to read if you need guidance and validation that what I am doing is the right thing (or wrong thing, for that matter) for you to be doing. I doubt anyone thinks that, but there it is. This is just a journal of my journey. I make some money. My bank account is private.

Yahoo bought Associated Content. Most of you backlink collectors know AC as the place you go to drop your article on turtle shoes for the tasty link love. If you don’t know of AC it may be time to introduce yourself. As you know, Yahoo is pretty much giving up its search engine to Bing. So what is left is its properties and ad network. As I am a web sewer magician I have told you that the great Lost Ball has seen a future where quality content will fucking matter. Do you think Yahoo bought AC because it like the amount of article sewage it displaces? It bought it because it wants relatively entertaining and informative articles, photos and videos to place their ads onto without having to create the content itself. AND it wants that content to show up in the remaining search engines.

It is a tasty business model. For them and you. This outfit pays you to write decent articles. Apparently you can earn upfront payments and residual fees. It’s a much better deal than Ezine Articles. Screw EA. They want the content to monetize 100% for themselves. They grudgingly allow you a backlink to your website. If I’m going to take the time to organize 400 words in an easy to understand arrangement, I’d like to get a little something more than a hyperlink for the effort.

Have I been using AC? Nope. I’ve preferred to spew easy to fling garbage into the landfill while sending some of my better refuse to Ezine. I think I may adjust my model to collect some coin from AC. You are going to get the vast authority that is Yahoo working for you. You will have the opportunity to at least earn something from your extra efforts. And you will be able to collect the all important backlink. Yahoo is encouraging publishers to create entertaining and informative articles, videos and photos.

Some of you may already be using this outfit to disperse your data into the web server. Maybe you are happy with the money it provides. Perhaps you think it sucks. Either way let’s hear about it. I’m sure no one gets rich using AC but it seems, in theory, like a good deal. Whatever suckage AC has maybe Yahoo will make it suck less.

I realize there is nothing new here. But the fact that Yahoo bought AC really perked my interest. There are times when I can sit down and pound out 400 words on a topic in about 10 minutes. But I can’t necessarily, nor want to, build a whole site around the topic. Maybe I want to create a video. Or build a photo slideshow. Whatever. The point is I now have the full authority of Yahoo. That changes my thinking on using AC for content dispersal. The potential for collecting coin is a powerful motivator. Between Squidoo, Hubpages and AC, you could certainly do worse in your efforts to make some extra money on the cheap.

The shift to quality content rolls on.

People have asked why I don’t quit the cubicle grind and flog Internet marketing for a living. Sure, working from home would be dandy. Not having a corporate structure to be subservient to would be fantastic. Making my own hours would be great. But simply being a slinger of mediocrity into the web sewers is no way to make an acceptable living for my family unit. If I was single with no responsibilities I would most certainly make my living off whatever I could earn from Internet marketing.

So you ask why don’t you create the mother of all authority sites and use it to make 5 figure fat stacks each month? Or why not develop your own products? Why not set up an ecommerce site and sell crap? The same reason why I don’t open up an auto body shop. Or become a worm farmer. I have no interest in that activity.

Seems some folks think that all make money online schemes are the same. Hey, if you like building niche sites then you’ll love dropshipping dog collars from your ecommerce site. If you like building affiliate marketing sites then you’ll love creating your own product and selling it. The hassles of keeping track of orders and selling something is not worth it to me for any amount of money. I’m already a slave to the grind. Why would I want to trade one grind for another? I’ve tried dropshipping and I think it sucks. I am not a software developer. Writing an ebook doesn’t really interest me either. So I affiliate market stuff.

The money I make from the Internet will allow me to retire sooner than later. It allows me to take vacations. It will allow me to send my kids to college. The marital unit does not have to work as she prefers to raise the children. We can homeschool the kids and not subject them to government education. That’s why I build a niche site.

But I do not trust the Internet nor myself to make a living online. I had a great Adsense month this past April. This month Google could terminate my account or de-index all my sites simply because they didn’t like an article I posted. I got an outstanding check from Crapbank last week. Those sites could be eliminated from the search results tomorrow. I really do not care for the online business. Having to make it a full-time gig would be as uninspiring as the work I perform in a cubicle. It’s much more palatable to simply do it when I want to. I am lazy about this business. I prefer to make money the easiest way possible. For me that is affiliate marketing. I don’t want to answer emails. Ship products. Develop stuff. I want to convince you to buy something and get a commission. That’s all.

The business model I follow requires that I rely on Google and to a much lesser extent, Bing and Yahoo. That is a huge risk. For now I reap nice rewards. Like others in this business that could end in a second. Lots of folks have had their income destroyed with the latest grand slash and burn of Adsense sites from Google’s listings.

Diversification is key obviously. I have a few well-paying Adsense sites. I refuse to build any more. The sites that I build now promote products from affiliate programs. If I want to chase Adsense then I use Hubpages and Squidoo as a proxy to collect those coins.

The ultimate goal is to create an authority site that becomes a real business. Something branded that people want to visit while you make good money. Something that will thrive simply because the Internet exists and irrespective if Google remains in business. And you know, an authority site does not have to be a 1,200 page monolith. To me an authority site is simply the go to location for information or entertainment. You know you have an authority site when people are linking to you naturally. When people are talking about your site. When Google stats mean nothing. When people contact you to place an advertising block on your site. That’s when you have a business I think. That’s the site(s) that I want to ultimately have (though lack of motivation and interest will retard that mission greatly) . If you are hustling daily to get backlinks to generate fake interest in your site then you aren’t quite there yet with an authority site.

As usual this was a long ramble. Just an explanation of how I see things. By the way, I hardly ever “teach” on this blog. I have no interest in people following what I do or don’t do. I don’t want to be responsible for your success or failure. I’ll tell you what I’m doing without telling you how I do it. For whatever it is worth.

Are you thinking about the iPad? Are you considering what the thing is going to do for, or to, your dinky blog? I have no interest in buying one but I can guarantee people like my parents, the casual surfer, the cool hipster, the student and the business user is about to leave their cumbersome laptop and desktop by the wayside. What does that mean for you, the article manager, busy filling the landfills with crap content? I dunno. But I have a feeling dynamic, meaningful and entertaining content is about to matter. You know how easy it is to click around links with a mouse? The shit you’ve been doing for the better part of 15 years? That is about to die an inglorious death, I think. People are now going to be tapping stuff. Tapping is a drag. I have an iPhone. It sucks. You have to pinch and zoom and tap. The iPad is larger and allows for better control. But the last thing people, I think, are going to be tapping is stupid Google ads. How many ads do you tap on with your iPhone?

I think the iPad-like devices are about to change how people interact with the Web. Not everybody is an Internet Marketer building shit. Most people hop on to be entertained, to alleviate boredom or get informed. The way they interact with webpages may in fact change with the iPad. Maybe not. But it is worth thinking that maybe those text links aren’t so damn groovy after all. Maybe banners will come back. It’s much easier to tap a banner than a small hyperlink.

Maybe nothing will change. Perhaps the web morass will continue to click on shitty niche sites. Maybe more so with an easy to use iPad. I just think that things may change with the iPad in ways that I am not able to articulate. The best sites on the iPhone are those with apps. The web browser sucks. Pinching and zooming is a necessary evil that I despise. The ones with apps are those that I go straight to info. They have no ads. No Adsense. If that is the future, how the hell are you going to be making money?

From 5 Min Forecast:

“Marketers might actually ‘need’ an iPad, and soon,” writes our friend and colleague John Forde. Mr. Forde is mostly a “behind the scenes” guy, and although he spends far too much of his free time visiting cafes in Paris, he’s an articulate and influential writer and thinker here at the Agora Financial HQ.

“The iPad is the logical next step,” Forde contends, “after smartphones, to the always-on society. If you’re looking to build and sustain a marketing relationship with your customers, this is great news.

“What I’m most excited about isn’t the nifty factor, or even the always-on connection. What I like is that I can start writing marketing that works like a page, and not just a scrolling screen again. Online magazines that look like real magazines, bookalogs that look like real books, letters with inserts that pop out at you — they all took a hit when online direct response started to eclipse pricey print mailings. Now they can come back, digital, but just as engaging as ever.

“And of course, for anybody selling information products, there are lots of new tech possibilities too. If you can get your hands on an iPad, take a look at the BBC and NPR apps to see how you could get your news in front of readers. Take a look at the Gilt app for ideas on how to create a tablet-friendly catalog.

“Already the e-mailed promotions I’m receiving via the iPad come in looking strong. But imagine if your letter had a little image of a customer service that, when double-tapped, underscored the headline benefit or pushed the reader ahead.

“Imagine animated charts in or embedded product demonstrations right there ahead of you sales close. And maps, coupons, offers, even headline tests, all driven by these tablets’ abilities to lock in exact locations via GPS and Wi-Fi triangulation…

“The iPad and imitators could end up as just novelties. But I don’t think so. This looks like an open door to me… and to other seasoned marketers I know too.
