Blog Comment Tip | Thoughts on Commenting on Blogs

July 31st, 2008 · 4 Comments

Thought I’d share something that I’ve been doing. Pardon me if it is obvious or something that you are already doing. By now you 11 readers know that a big part of getting back links is through comments you leave on other blogs. Most of you may be using one of 7,291 tools to get the job done. Personally I like Fast Blog Finder, but that is not the point of this carefully crafted and beautifully written blog post. Nay, what I have been utilizing is Google Alerts. I set up alerts for keywords I am targeting and let Google deliver an email to me daily alerting me (Get it? Alerting. Google Alerts. Clever shit huh?) to blogs that are posting on that keyword. I can then click over and make a comment and leave my anchor text link for backlink glory. Hallelujah brothers and sisters.

So the non believers among you are casting stones at the fact that the blog may be a “do not follow” morass. To that I say, so what? It’s still a link that can be followed by someone. I don’t think you should play this game solely for what you can get out of it. Mayhap it is good Karma to simply be part of the community and expect nothing. Commenting on someones blog helps you and it helps the blogger. Whether Google rolls with it or not it’s a good thing.

I think commenting is a big part of why my WP.com traffic is what it is. I have no idea half the time if the blog is a DNF or not. I simply don’t care. If I do then I use Fast Blog Finder to find those that are not. But lately I haven’t really been taking the time. The Google alerts are current and they are topical. Seems like a good play to me.

I actually leave comments on blogs all the time **WITHOUT** a website listed. Personally, I think that there is so much more to life than simply searching out the “do follow” blogs. BTW, I can’t even post on this blog with a website even if I wanted to…..I think that your captcha gets me..

Hey Leo. I’m not sure what you mean about the captcha.
I tend to always leave a URL unless I’m commenting on WP.com.

In the immortal words of Peter G.

    FRICKIN SWEET

Odd, but I did this a few years ago to read blogs but not comment.

Great tip on using Google Alerts! I had been using it for awhile but quit due to the amount of junk I was getting. Maybe I should try it again!

One tip I was using when commenting is that I set up folders in my bookmarks with the name of the niche and when I would leave a comment on a blog, I would bookmark that site. This way I could go back later and leave another comment so that my one comment, all by itself, wouldn’t look so spammy and help build the community.
