I can’t win. As a few of you who bother reading this crap know I moved all my websites over to one host. Trying to save money and maybe a little bit of time. Well apparently the hosting company has a problem with the resources that I am using and shut down all my sites. Did they bother emailing to tell me I was causing a problem? No, the assholes simply took me offline. They moved me to a shitty “transitional” server that has limited availability. Who knows if you will even see this whine.
I figure it has to be one of my blogs. It serves up a decent amount of photos. That is the only one it can be and I disabled it. Maybe the technicians will put me back on the production server. Of course when they do my sites will be offline for another few hours.
Blogs. Man I hate those things. I’ve been on three different hosting services and I’ve always had problems with the databases. That’s why I like XSP and static sites. Pure and simple html pages. Nothing dynamic. I don’t think I am going to self host another blog again. There are plenty of free blog hosts on the web that I can use.
Did ya’ll see Griz’s post yesterday? It completely bummed me out. Yesterday wasn’t a stellar day either and when I read his post where he collected $9K in 10 days it simply deflated me. Don’t get me wrong I’m happy for anybody to achieve success and wealth. He works hard and deserves it. But I just can’t seen to get over this hump of mediocrity. While he was checking his Adsense to see how many more benjamins were added, I was checking my Today.com to see how many more pennies I earned. It’s just pathetic.
Like he said in a comment on his site: Some people do the right thing and some people do things right. Doing the right thing brings in a few extra stacks a month for me to play with. Doing things right seems like the way to go if you can figure out what the hell that is.

yup I saw Griz post. I suppose if you are constantly throwing shit against the G wall you are going to have some good things happen to ya. The cool thing about MMO is if you find something that works it goes in your toolbox. Griz is a pro so when he snags nice cash it doesn’t bother me.
You know it also shows that there are so many ways to MMO

Heck yeah, I saw his post yesterday too. It’s amazing what he’s done but please keep in mind what he’s been saying to us along.
It has taken him 2 years to get to this point. What seems like easy sailing to many was actually a few years of trial and error much like what you’re experiencing right now.
It’s all good partner.

Many years ago, I leased a set of scripts from my hosting company. About a year later I got a call from them telling me that they were “upgrading” me to a dedicated server, at many, many times my monthly rate. Say what? They explained that my scripts were hogging too many resources on a shared server. They didn’t much care that they had written the scripts and had leased them to me to use on that very server.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Anyone who builds a load of WP blogs (or even worse, uses Drupal or Joomla) on shared hosting is going to get the ‘resources abuse’ email eventually.
It’s pretty bad that your hosts didn’t even send you an email though. That sucks even worse and shows how little they respect their customers.
All of these shared hosts that offer ‘unlimited everything’ are oversellers (without exception), even when some try to tell you otherwise.
The worst ones only ‘hint’ at cpu in their small print.
And it is getting worse, as more reseller hosts (as most of them are) come on the market and more people looked for shared hosting (as opposed to dedicated), because that is the only thing they can afford right now.
This is going to lead to server overloading and blogs which used to run like lightening suddenly loading slow or timing out.
So yes, basic html pages on shared hosting could be the way to go – no database stuff to get hacked either. And build your blacklinks blogs on freehosts.
The only thing is, if a freehost goes down, or shuts down your account, you are back to square one.
Hey, the joys of trying to make money on the net.
And yes, I read Griz’s post, but I wasn’t deflated, or surprised.
He is what he is and he offers a hell of a lot.
Hope your hosting problems sort themselves out.

Yea, it still continues this morning. I’m starting to believe that it is best just to build throwaway sites. At least until you figure they can make money. Freehost site building is risky. I had a batch of blogs go away because the freehost shut the site down. It happens.
It’s pretty simple. I’m going to build networks of feeder blogs on free blog hosts and point them to HTML “money” sites. Between Blogger, Wordpress.com, Squidoo, Hubpages, Synthasite, Weebley, etc., there are plenty of free ways to blog. Screw hosting them myself.
Yea you can learn a lot from Griz. There aren’t many weeks that even I don’t go back and re-read his basic website building posts just to keep grounded in what I need to be doing. And I almost always keep a copy of Court’s Keyword report open when I’m researching. I think Court’s keyword report to be the best thing I’ve read on IM. Simple, direct, useful and free.

Sorry to hear about your troubles Splork. What can I say – I like Blogger. I’d be screwed if they shut down so I try not to think about it. Hope your hosting sorts itself out – if you think a post slamming them on my site would help just let me know.

I know you don’t like GoDaddy but seriously, I have multiple blogs on a shared server and have never encountered a single problem.
Griz is a pro and is somebody to look up to and learn from. If there wasn’t somebody like Griz letting us know that we could be doing much better, then we would never know.
Blogging is like water against a rock. Sooner or later, most likely later, the water will win.
Splork // Mar 17, 2009 at 9:27 am
Hey Griz. Nah. It’s partly my problem. I’m cheap. I shouldn’t have tried to save a few bucks.
That said, they are assholes. My game changed a bit so I’ll have to adjust. I’m going to fully utilize Blogger and XSP for building sites.
Splork // Mar 17, 2009 at 9:33 am
Potato Chef, I imagine GoDaddy has some sort of CPU utilization limit. I have some blogs that get a lot of traffic. I shouldn’t be surprised. What I am is pissed they simply shut me down with no notice. I don’t want dedicated hosting. I won’t need that with HTML sites. My best performing site is HTML. Blogs are resource hogs. I don’t need the aggravation when I can use free blog hosts. I can post a new page with XSP just as well as I can logging into a WP blog and posting. There is no difference.

Can you tell us who your host provider is?
Have you considered Powweb.com or Bluehost.com ?
Splork // Mar 17, 2009 at 1:44 pm
Lunarpages.
The problem is the WP blogs. There isn’t a shared hosting site that wouldn’t have a problem with the traffic. I’ve got to cache the pages. At least that’s the plan as of now.
best fat burn // Mar 17, 2009 at 4:31 pm
I had Hostgator shut me down on and off for the better part of 2 weeks cause of my blogs taking up CPU server resources.
The techs told me which blogs were causing the problem and had to upgrade WP to latest install. Also had to install wp-super-cache and upgrade all plugins to latest versions. Once installed I chose every option possible for super-cache, and it seemed to work fine. No more issues.
I’m sure this will fix your problem. Good luck.
Splork // Mar 17, 2009 at 5:36 pm
Yea I just installed wp-super-cache on a few of my most trafficked sites. So far the install went just fine. We’ll see if it passes the test. Thanks
Terry Didcott // Mar 18, 2009 at 10:10 am
Hey Splork, sorry to hear your hosting probs.
I’ve been setting up some blogs lately that are going to be resource hogs bigtime, but they’re on my reseller so I’m hoping to contain it. Just read the comment mentioning WP super-cache and glad I did – I’d forgotten all about it… I think now would be a good time to go and install it… thanks mate!
Splork // Mar 18, 2009 at 11:49 am
Hey Terry, it seems to work well. No word yet from the host whether it solved the problem but it was an easy install.

You need to check into the Hostgator. In two years, never a problem except some “scheduled maintenance” downtime the other night..
I know a web designer from Canada who has a reseller account with them – and again – no problems.
If Hostgator does not float your boat, then take a look at Rackspace cloud hosting, West Host, Host Monster (I think Host Monster is owned by Hostgator), Pair Networks, Dreamhost, or Bluehost. Also, Nearlyfreespeech.net brags..
“For as little as $0.25, you can move your websites to NearlyFreeSpeech.NET, the original home of only pay for what you use hosting. See the proof for yourself.”
That might appeal to your cheap side (LOL!).
Anyway, if you have not thought of it already, then just go to Hostjury.com, Hostreview.com, Web Host Magazine, Webhostingtalk.com,
or http://news.netcraft.com/ (Netcraft)
for hosting reviews.
Netcraft has a list of hosts with the best uptime.
Here is the full list at Netcraft..
http://uptime.netcraft.com/perf/reports/performance/Hosters?tn=february_2009
Anyway, just thought I would throw in my “hosting recommendation” two cents.
I know you have other needs besides uptime, but at least you have a place to start if you are still looking for hosts – or will be in the future..
Thats my rant..
Cheer up..
You have the skills to pay the bills..
Don’t give up..

Well at the risk of depressing myself, where is Griz’s blog that has this post?
I made 48 cents in Adsense in March so far. Good thing I’m working on MULTIPLE streams (or drips) of income.

Splork..
Some extended recommendations..
You might know about this already, but if you want to have a blog format without the database have you tried MyStarterBlog.com?
MyStarterBlog.com
http://www.mcgrathinfosolution.com/mystarterblog_en.htm
No databases regular type HTML type files – It think. I do know that there is no MySQL involved.
It is only 7 dollars as of this writing. I think it could get as high as 17 dollars at some point. They might be a special running now..
Anyway, just an afterthought..
I am probably going to get it..
Regards..
Robert C..
Splork // Mar 22, 2009 at 9:05 am
You can use Pivot for free. I used to run that blog platform until I jumped on the Fantastico Wordpress bandwagon. No database. If I decided to host blogs again that would be what I’d use.
